Light a Candle for Your Salvation

Funny Girl

This girl was so funny. I shot a couple of pictures of her and she turned around and caught me. We started making faces at each other and playing peek-a-boo and counting out fingers and just generally entertaining each other. I held up my camera to show her that I was going to take a few more pictures and she started posing for me. Unfortunately none of those were as focused as this one. At one point she pointed outside and I looked over my shoulder and saw a really beautiful sunset. I turned to her and gave her a thumbs up, then turned around and shot some sunset photos. I looked back at her and she gave me a thumbs up. I love that fact that, even at her young age, she had an eye for a pretty sunset and knew enough to point it out to me.

Twas the Snow Storm Before Christmas

Snow Before Christmas 1

So I got lazy and missed the pristine, white snow. I didn't go outside until after it was all gray and dirty. That's okay...I like things a little gritty anyway.

UPDATE: This is a picture of the Dallas Barbecue (BBQ's as my friend Russell calls it) in Washington Heights. The other night I stopped in there to get the #1 Take-out Special on my way home from work and snapped this picture. I've always thought it was odd and wondered why they have pictures of cowboys (early representatives of Manifest Destiny) juxtaposed with a poster of Malcolm X (representative of more than I could write in this short space). I found out why this past weekend.

This was the site where Malcolm X was killed. The location used to be a theater called the Audubon Ballroom. Malcolm was giving a speech there and was shot and killed...I'm sure you've all seen Spike Lee's film about it. Apparently, Columbia University owns the building and wanted to tear it down in the 90's to build some glass and chrome something or other but some Preservation societies and some dedicated students stepped in and said, "NO!" (luckily). Now it is a BBQ's. The place where one of the most influential black men in history was assasinated sells barbecue chicken and ribs and Henny Coladas. Aint that somethin'?

RIP Teddy and Bean

Last Sunday my cat Teddy died. She was 14 and had some medical issues and died from a heart attack.

Before Teddy lived with me she lived with Laura and Trela in Denver. Laura had her since she was 1 year old. She got her from a shelter in Boulder. Laura also had a dog named Bean, a chocolate lab.

Bean and Teddy lived together for a few years, until Laura got pregnant and Teddy came to live with me. Bean was a good dog. She lived for Laura, or rather Laura was her reason for living. Bean died this morning, a week after Teddy died. You could say it was coincidental but I think maybe those two were connected in ways that I didn't realize.

They were both so much more than pets. They were friends and part of the family. They had such great personalities and they were nice to have around. Apparently they both had plans that didn't include any of us.  Teddy is now at the biggest turkey banquet there ever was and Bean is chasing a stick into eternity.

I miss you guys. Thanks for sharing your journeys with me.

An Interesting Exercise

I tried painting this picture in watercolors.

This was the result. I used to be a half-way decent painter. Those days are gone. I left out a lot of detail. I have no control with the watercolors anymore. That was fun.

Water Privatization is No Deal

I wrote a post about water privatization and who pays what for water on the GreenFork Blog.
